In Parent Central, Upper School

Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality.

Domestic & International Serving Teams

January, 2020 (dates vary per team)
Open to: Upper School Students, grades vary per team
Cost: Varies per team

CHA is excited to offer four serving trips this January – one domestic team to a border town in Texas, and three international teams to the Dominican Republic, Cuba, and France. France is a new addition and we are very excited about broadening our trip options this year to include Europe. We have been serving in the Dominican Republic for the past eight years and this will be our second year sending teams to Texas and Cuba. Each trip, including Chicago locations, will be lead by CHA teachers and the teams will meet during the fall to team build, prepare their hearts and learn the details of what the trip entails. Each traveling team needs a minimum of 10 students for the trip to happen, except for the Dominican Republic trip which needs a minimum of 12 students. We hope to give each student their first choice, but we pray that each student will be happy to serve on their second choice if necessary.

Seniors will get priority on the teams until July 1, after which teams will be open for all Upper School students. Teams will be announced as soon as we can this summer. Students and parents will each receive an online “application” to fill out once the deposit has been submitted. Both the student form and parent form before must be completed and returned before you can be confirmed on a team. There will not be school planned fundraisers but each team can decide if they want to put together a fundraiser or parents can coordinate them as well. Mrs. Collins can help any student put together a letter to send out to family and friends for support this summer. Please reach out to her if you would like help.

Students may select a first and second choice from the following locations:

Domestic / International Serving Options

McAllen, Texas

Saturday, January 4 – Friday, January 10, 2020
Mission Partner:
Experience Mission
Open to: Grades 9-12
Cost: $1,250

This team will have the amazing opportunity to serve alongside the local church in Las Milpas, Texas, five miles from the US-Mexico border. We are partnering with Experience Mission for this service learning opportunity. This Mexican-American community in the poorest county in Texas, has seemingly been forgotten in the past few years. Connecting with local children through children’s ministry is an important part of what our team will do each day. Team members will also participate in a variety of activities that will help them understand the culture and the needs in the community. The team will be planning and bringing supplies to help with work that is needed at churches and on a farm as well as in the community. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to use their Spanish and learn about the poverty struggles right here in our own country.

Saturday, January 4- Friday, January 10, 2020
Mission Partner: Experience Mission
Open to: Grades 10-12
Cost: $1,825

In partnership with Experience Mission, our team will be working with the local Christian Church that was under extreme oppression between 1959 and the mid 1990’s. The team will living and serving at a rural farm run by missionaries that provides food to churches all over Cuba. The team will visit a variety of churches and be able to serve at a disability ministry by coordinating a crafts, leading games, singing, and hearing the stories of the families and how the church has grown even under communism. It will be a wonderful opportunity to learn about the history of Cuba from a Christian perspective.

Please note: Mrs. Collins has been in contact with our mission coordinators and the travel agents and the new travel ban that has been put in place in Cuba does not look like it will affect our team. We will be closely monitoring the situation but both parties have no hesitations about booking this trip.

Costanza, Dominican Republic

Saturday, January 4- Saturday, January 11, 2020
Mission Partner: Kids Alive International
Open to: Grades 10-12
Cost: $1,925

This team will have the amazing experience of serving with Kids Alive International in a rural mountain town of Costanza in the Dominican Republic. The Kids Alive mission is to develop responsible Christian adults from children who were once in at-risk situations (e.g., poverty, abuse, malnutrition, or abandonment). This is done by providing quality Christian homes and/or relationship-based day programs that equip the children spiritually, educationally, physically, emotionally, and vocationally so that they might become responsible Christian adults who impact their country for Jesus. This team will serve at The Ark, a children’s home and school, where they will build relationships with the children, teachers and staff by serving in any capacity needed, including work in the classrooms, construction projects, meal preparation and serving, and interacting and playing with the kids each day. Students will learn a lot about the community and culture through the missionaries that will be hosting the team.

Lyon, France

Thursday, January 2- Sunday, January 12, 2020
Mission Partner Family: the Ducrozet Family (former CHA family)
Open to: Grades 11-12
Cost: $2,400

This team will have an incredible opportunity to serve in France with a former CHA family, the Ducrozets, who serve as missionaries in Lyon. They have invited us to come and stay in homes of members of their church, learn about the struggles of the church in France, and serve in a variety of ministries while learning how each of those ministries serves its community. The team will hopefully be able to spend one day in the local public school where the family’s children attend and are the only Christians. The team will also learn and serve with the local CRU ministry while in Lyon. We are working with the Ducrozets to create a week of serving and learning about how God is working in France. Two nights will also be spent in a youth hostel in Paris while Mr. Farish guides the team to museums and historical sites around the city.

A message from the Ducrozet family, Matthieu, Hélène, Timothée, Séphora, Siméon and Théophile Ducrozet:

France is one of the most secular countries in the world. Less than 4% of the population go to church. Today, it reaches the point that nobody knows anything about Jesus. But right now, we can see a shift in the French society from animosity to curiosity for the Gospel. People are much more open to the Gospel than they were just 10 years ago! In France, we have two good seminaries to train pastors, but nothing prepares them to be good leaders. The pastors in France learn in a harsh way, and many of them burn out, like I did, or leave the ministry, exhausted and discouraged. Therefore a lot of people are scared to follow the call to serve in leadership positions in the church. That is why we are building a new leadership development ministry for Pastors. The new ministry will give the pastors the help, training, advice, and support they truly need and will allow them not to be alone anymore, so that the church can bear more fruit. Our vision is that each church in France has a great leader and is ready for this new generation of seekers. Please pray for France, for pastors, for this new generation of seekers, and for us!
