Sports Report – 5/25/22

Upper School Boys’ Volleyball:

  • The Boys’ Varsity team finished the regular season on a high note, winning 9 of their last 11 matches, the last one taking place on 5/19 against Beacon Academy (25-17, 25-13). The Lions moved on to Regional play on 5/23, losing to the #12 seeded Evanston Township Wildkits. Congratulations for a great volleyball season overall!
Sports Report – 4/21/22

Upper School Boys’ Volleyball:

  • Boys’ JV won against Wheaton Academy on 4/20 in three sets (17-25, 25-17, and 25-23). In the third set, the Lions were trailing 12-19 when Ben O’Shea stepped up to serve and brought the team to a one-point lead. Nathan Rusu served to match point, when a faulty service by Wheaton ended up giving us the victory.
  • The Boys’ Varsity team battled the Wheaton Academy Warriors on 4/20, but fell 21-25 and 17-25. In the opening set of the night cap, Jonathan Shaw opened our scoring with a run of 3 points, putting the Lions up 4-1. Wheaton answered that challenge and held on in a seesaw set. The Warriors’ size and experience paid off in the second set. Nathan Chung’s serving (6 points) kept the Lions close, but in the end, Wheaton Academy closed out the set.

Upper School Boys’ Volleyball:

  • Boys’ Varsity traveled to Cary for a match against Trinity Oaks Christian Academy on 4/7. The Lions fought through some tough rallies and prevailed 25-20 and 25-18. On 4/8, the Lions played Lake Forest Academy, jumping out to an early lead in the first set, and holding on for a 25-16 win in that set. The second set came down to the wire, but the Lions came up short, 23-25. In the final set, the lead went back and forth. With some great defense, the Lions won the set 25-20.
  • Boys’ JV played Lake Forest Academy on 4/8. Behind the outstanding serving of Joshua Shaw, the team was able to battle well, though eventually lost in 3 sets (20-25, 25-20, and 20-25).

Upper School Boys’ Volleyball:

  • Boys’ Varsity played Grayslake North at CHA on 4/5 to start the 2022 campaign, but were overpowered by the Knights (12-25 in both sets). Nathan Chung led the Lions in solid play on offense in the setting department, and on defense with his ability to dig the ball to keep plays alive.
  • Boys’ JV defeated Grayslake North on 4/5, 25-22 and 25-20. It was a hard-fought match, led by the setting of Nathan Rusu and Timmy Chen. Noah Pfeiffelman was outstanding with his attacking and serving.

Middle School Boys’ Volleyball:

  • Boys’ Varsity won their game against Sears on 3/3.
  • Boys JV had their first win of the season against Sears on 3/3. It was a well-fought battle with a great comeback after losing the first set.

Middle School Boys’ Volleyball:

  • Boys’ Varsity celebrated three consecutive ones, including over Washburn Green (2/28), Washburn White, (3/1) and Central (3/2). In the Washburn White match-up, Isaiah Beane had the play of the game with a block at the net that had the crowd on their feet!
  • Boys JV lost to Washburn Green (2/28), Washburn White (3/1), and Central (3/2).
Sports Report – 2/24/22

Upper School Basketball:

  • Girls’ Varsity played the #1 seed, Orr Academy, for the IHSA Regional Championship on 2/17. Unfortunately, the Lions lost 11-72. However, it was a good inaugural season for this team, and they ended with a 7-3 record!
  • Boys’ Varsity won their IHSA Regional Quarterfinal game against Waldorf Academy on 2/19, with a score of 63-43. Defensively, the Lions held the opponent’s leading scorer to 8 points, while we exploded with 3 starters scoring in double figures. Jonathan Ward led all scorers with 27 points, Jonathan Shaw had 14, and John Farish had 10.
  • Boys’ Varsity competed in the IHSA Regional Semifinal on 2/23, falling to the #1 seeded Rochelle Zell, 36-71. The Lions started strong, leading 14-11 after the first quarter. In the second quarter, Rochelle Zell capitalized on their size and speed, taking the lead 34-23. Our seniors provided positive leadership in their final game, combining for 21 of our 36 points. Jonathan Ward led all scorers with 9 points, Matthew Tina added 6, Philip Amarei 5, and John Farish, 2.
Sports Report – 2/15/22

Upper School Basketball:

  • In an IHSA Regional Semifinal match-up, our Girls’ Varsity earned an upset victory over the #4 seeded Lycee Francais. Ani Christian had 9 points and Ashlee Kim added 7 in the winning effort. The Lady Lions will play for a Regional championship on Thursday against the #1 team, Orr Academy, at Orr. Opening tip is set for 7 PM. GO LIONS!
Sports Report – 2/11/22

Upper School Basketball:

  • Girls’ Varsity finished their regular season with three wins in a row! On 2/7 they beat Cristo Rey St. Martin (40-11), on 2/8 Elgin Academy (42-2), and on 2/10, Westminster Christian (28-22). The are entering in to IHSA regional play beginning 2/14 with a 6-2 record. Go Lions!
  • Boys’ Varsity conquered Valeo Academy on 2/10, 45-25. In the first quarter alone, Jonathan Ward had 8 points, Matthew Tina had 7, and Jonathan Shaw chipped in with 5. The Lions were able to get significant playing time for every player, which will help them be equipped for entering into regionals next week.

Upper School Basketball:

  • Boys Varsity fell to Beacon Academy on 2/7, 52-53. For the second game in a row, the Lions had a chance to win the game at the buzzer, but could not prevail. Jonathan Ward led all scorers with 13 points. The team competed again on 2/8 vs. Elgin Academy, losing 35-57. A cold night of shooting resulted in a lopsided loss to the Hilltoppers. The bright spot for the Lions was the offensive production of Sophomore Isaiah Ju, leading the scoring with 18 points.

Middle School Volleyball:

  • In their opening game of the season, Boys’ Varsity beat Sunset Ridge on 2/3. After losing the first set, they came back to win the next two! Carson Acres scored the two winning points in both winning matches. The team also beat Central on 2/7 and Washburn Green on 2/8. In the first two games, the Lions had a total of 16 aces! The team conquered Sunset Ridge once again on 2/9 and remains undefeated!
  • Boys’ JV fell to Central on 2/7 in three well-fought matches. They also lost to Washburn Green in three matches on 2/8. Ben de las Alas led in serving.

Upper School Basketball:

  • Boys’ JV had a great win over Westminster Christian on 1/28, with a score of 35-28. The Lions played strong defense as a team, and were led in scoring by Isaiah Ju with 16 points and Joshua Shaw with 10.
  • Boys’ Varsity fell to Westminster, 47-49, in a tight matchup on 1/29. Our boys came out of the blocks quickly and led by 9 after one quarter of play. A scoring slump in the second quarter saw the lead evaporate and we trailed 21-32. Westminster led by as many as 13 in the second half, but the Lions started chipping away at their lead. We tied the score at 47 with under 10 seconds left in play. However, Westminster pulled ahead with 2.7 seconds remaining in the game, and we couldn’t come back. Jonathan Ward led the scoring with 24 points, and Isaiah Ju added 11.

Upper School Basketball:

  • Girls’ Varsity beat Rochelle Zell, 32-25, on 1/27, in this rematch from last week’s game. Nina de las Alas, Ani Christian, and Eileen Chavez contributed to the victory with 8 points each. Ashlee Kim added 6 points of her own, and Mia Ottaviano was 2-2 from the line.
  • Girls’ Varsity fell to Willows Academy on 1/24, 11-51. Eileen Chavez led the team in scoring, netting 7 points.

Upper School Basketball:

  • In their first home game ever, the newly established CHA Girls’ Varsity team defeated Rochelle Zell on 1/20, 35-20. Their record is now 2-1. The Lions were led in scoring by Eileen Chavez with 12 points, followed by Ashlee Kim (8), Nina de las Alas (7), Ani Christian (6), and Abigail Acierto (2).
Sports Report – 1/18/22

Upper School Basketball:

  • Boys’ JV defeated Rochelle Zell, 37-36, on 1/18! It was a close game from the opening tip. At the end of the 3rd quarter, the Lions led 30-28. Isaiah Ju made a shot that put us ahead 37-34 with less than one minute to go. RZJHS answered Isaiah’s basket with one of their own, but the Lions were able to hold on for the victory.
  • Boys’ Varsity lost to Rochelle Zell, 40-75. Jonathan Ward led all scores with 22 on the night. Despite the lopsided victory for RZJHS, the Lions played hard against the pressure and halftime adjustments resulted in a 50% reduction in turnovers, and an almost 566% reduction in the points lost due to turnovers.
Sports Report – 1/13/22

Upper School Basketball:

  • Boys’ JV defeated Westlake Christian, 38-20, on 1/7. The Lions had a slow start in this first game after the Christmas break, but settled into the game after the first quarter. Congratulations to Isaiah Ju who led all scorers with 23 points!
  • Boys’ Varsity lost to Westlake Christian, 36-44, on 1/7. In the first half, the Lions were down by 7, but battled their way back to cut Westlake’s lead to 3 during the second half. In the end, though, the fire power just wasn’t there.
  • Boys’ Varsity came back on 1/12 with a 42-15 win over Cristo Rey St. Martin! Everyone played well with strong offense and defense.

Middle School Basketball:

  • On 12/15, it was tough losses for both our clubs against Washburne Green, who played lights out against both the Boys’ Varsity and JV teams.
  • Wilmette is one of the strongest teams in the league, and neither the Boys’ Varsity or JV teams could keep up against them on 12/16. However, our Lions played extremely hard, and our sixth graders got some playing time, too.
Sports Report – 12/14/21

Upper School Basketball:

  • Boys’ Varsity fell to Westlake Christian on 12/13, 67-75. However, four Lions scored in double figures: John Farish (19), Jonathan Ward (14), Jonathan Shaw (14), and Matthew Tina (12).
  • Boys’ JV won against Westlake Christian on 12/13, 41-36, and remains undefeated this year. Isaiah Ju led the team in scoring with 15 points. Joshua Shaw chipped in with 12 points, Benji Clayton added 6, and Nathan Rusu 5. Timmy Chen contributed to the win by providing outstanding defensive stops at crucial times throughout the game.

Middle School Basketball:

  • Boys’ JV had a fantastic game against Sunset Ridge on 12/9, but fell short (29-36) in overtime.
  • Boys’ Varsity had a tough loss against Sunset Ridge on 12/9 (25-34) after a valiant comeback effort to bring the game close at the end.
  • Girls’ JV fought hard against Sunset Ridge for the second time on 12/9, losing 10-36. In the 12/13 game against Central, the Lions lost 6-26. Congrats to Madison Acierto with 4 points!
Sports Report – 12/9/21

Upper School Basketball:

  • Boys’ Varsity won against Cristo Rey St. Martin on 12/8/21 in a very physical game. At the end of the first quarter, CHA had a slim lead at 16-13. By halftime, the Lions had stepped up defensively and had a 16-point lead. The Lions’ shutout in the third quarter secured the win, 52-20.
  • Girls’ Varsity secured their first win in school history as the newest Upper School team at CHA in a game against Cristo Rey St. Martin on 12/8, 33-8. Their record now stands at 2-2.

Middle School Basketball:

  • Boys’ JV had their first win of the season on 12/6, defeating Marie Murphy 29-27! Jack Balis with 20 points led the Lions in victory. On 12/7 they fought hard but lost at the finish to Washburne White, 32-35.
  • Boys’ Varsity was in a barn burner on 12/6 but lost in the end to Marie Murphy, 28-31. On 12/7, they played incredibly hard but lost to the tough Washburne White, 12-40, where one of the players was over 6’4″!
  • Girls’ JV played Marie Murphy on 12/6, losing 16-21. Their game on 12/7 against Washburn White ended in a loss, 8-46.
