The late Ella French was an officer who served with the Chicago Police Department and was was tragically killed in the line of duty in August 2021. Known for her compassion and community outreach, she played a pivotal role in saving lives, including a one-year-old child. To carry on her legacy, the Chicago Police Foundation has established a scholarship in her name, supporting high school students, particularly children of CPD officers, with up to $10,000 for education expenses. Her mother, Elizabeth French, a retired teacher, supports this initiative, believing Ella would be honored.
This scholarship not only commemorates Officer French’s dedication but also emphasizes the importance of education for youth. The initiative is intended to reflect Ella’s passion for helping others, giving back to the community she served, and encouraging future generations to value their education and compassion for others. Through this memorial, Ella's impact continues to touch lives beyond her service.
One such student recipient attends CHA! Sophomore Maddie Padar is the daughter of a Chicago Police officer and attended the event with her parents to receive the scholarship award by Elizabeth French. When asked what this scholarship means to her and her family, Maddie had this to say:
I had the privilege to be among the 28 recipients of the Ella French scholarship. It not only honors Chicago Police Officer Ella French who died in the line of duty, but also inspires the future generation to leave a lasting effect on their community. Learning about Ella French and hearing her mother speak at the scholarship luncheon has pushed me to be more intentional as I go through life to glorify God and make an impact on others’ lives.
Her father, Jay Padar, who has served with the Chicago Police Department for the last 26 years as a Police Officer and Sergeant, also had this to share:
Our family is tremendously proud that Maddie was selected as a recipient of the Ella French Scholarship. She embodies the characteristics that Ella French possessed and demonstrated throughout her life. The staff at CHA were instrumental in helping Maddie win this scholarship. I'd like to give a special thanks to Rebekah Van Someren, Carolyn Kohl, and especially, Sharon Ledbetter. This would not have been possible without their assistance. Thank you to all at CHA who pour into our children equipping them to be future leaders with a strong Christian foundation. May God continue to bless you all.
Thank you to Officer Jay for his continued years of service, and congratulations to Maddie for receiving this award!
